Brie is one of the most consumed, as well as one of the oldest, cheeses in the world. It is a French cheese, originating specifically from the Seine-et-Marne region in northern France, which also bears the historical name of Brie.

Brie, the favorite of French kings

The first mentions of this cheese date back to the 8th century. An old legend says that Emperor Charlemagne tasted this cheese in a monastery in the town of Reuil-en-Brie, in the Seine-et-Marne region of northern France. He was so impressed by this creamy and flavorful product that he requested his new discovery to become a staple in his daily menu.

Another legend of Brie cheese appears in the Middle Ages, specifically in the 13th century. It claims that King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette would stop at an inn near the town of Meaux, in the Seine-et-Marne region, to taste the buttery center of a type of white-mold cheese one last time.

Even though it has its origins in France, Brie is now produced in many other countries, being one of the best-known and most consumed types of mold-ripened cheese in the world.

For this reason, it seemed natural to us that it should be part of the cheese catalog of the Torockoi Dairy Factory.

"The cheese is a semi-soft cheese that requires a 45-day maturation period. It is available in 300-gram blocks, and the white mold rind is edible," states Robert Szakacs, Executive Director of the Torockoi Dairy Factory.

This is the newest cheese variety produced by the dairy factory in Colțești, Alba County, having been launched on the market only at the beginning of 2019.
